Must-try Recipes with Moong Dal
Are you familiar with Indian cuisine? Moong dal is one of their staple ingredients, especially used in some of their signature dishes. Here’s a moong dal recipe that you can easily prepare at home for your family.
Buttery Moong Dal with Garlic and Cumin
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of TRS Moong Dal (soaked for 2 hours – rinsed and drained)
- ½ teaspoon of turmeric
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 3 tablespoons of butter
- 1 green chilli, slit (lengthwise)
- 4 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 large-size shallot, diced
- Garam masala or Red chilli powder, optional
Procedure/s:
- In a large soup pot, (medium heat) boil 7 cups of water and put the TRS Moong Dal, then season with salt and turmeric. Stir gently.
- Turn down the heat to a low setting, and cover the pot (leave the lid slightly ajar). Cook the dal for about 45 minutes. Check frequently; remove the foam residue as it cooks. Once the softness of the moong dal is in line with your preference, taste again and add salt if needed.
- You will know that it is cooked once the sauce has thickened. You may adjust to your liking by adding water gradually. Once cooked, set aside.
- In a separate pan, melt butter over medium-high heat. Add cumin, chilli, and garlic. Saute for 1 minute or until the garlic turns golden brown, add the shallots and cook until they soften. Cook for another minute and turn off the heat.
- Transfer the combined ingredients to the soup pot and stir well. Make sure to integrate the cooked dal with all the ingredients.
- Transfer to a serving bowl, top with garam masala or chilli powder.
- Serve with freshly cooked basmati rice for a complete experience. Enjoy!
