White potatoes are distinguishable by their shape and size. The shorter varieties are quite common in the market; they are round, almost baseball-like, with slightly tan skin, and freckles. The longer varieties are of lighter white tones, less freckling (eyes), and have silky smooth skin.

It is one of the most common vegetables that are widely used in almost every cuisine around the world. It is such a versatile ingredient packed with nutrients too. White potatoes are rich in carbohydrates with a moderate amount of calories; it is also a great source of fibre, vitamins, and minerals. For some cuisines, it is the usual equivalent of rice that makes an entire dish complete. Nowadays, it might be even hard to find a restaurant without a potato dish on the menu. They come in various forms like French fries, hash browns, wedges, salads, mashed, and the likes.

White Potatoes vs. Red Potatoes

The main distinction between these two is not just their colours; rather, it is their starch content. The white potatoes with the light brown skin are the starchy kind, while the red potatoes have less starch but more sugary; these are the ones with a light red colour, hence the name.

White Potatoes vs. Sweet Potatoes

Both white or regular and sweet potatoes are tuberous root vegetables. However, they are very distinctive when it comes to appearance and taste.

White and sweet potatoes are almost at the same level when it comes to calories, protein, and carbohydrates. However, sweet potatoes have higher contents of fibre and vitamins. Though both are distantly related, regular and sweet potatoes are from different plant families. Additionally, the regular potatoes are of light brown, yellow, or red skin and have white or yellowish flesh. Sweet potatoes (also called yams) have brown skin but orange flesh and also come with purple, yellow, and red.
